On January 26, 2006 a presentation on a proposal for a significant New Okanagan Regional Park was made to the Parks Advisory Committee of the Regional District of Central Okanagan, jointly submitted by the Central Okanagan Naturalists' Club, and the Gellatly Bay Trails and Parks Society.

This proposal is now under consideration by the Regional District. No municipal decision has been made at present, nor any agreement reached with the property owners.

The Proposal and Summary (PDF File)

This park proposal is for the area located on part of Goat Peak - which includes those spectacular wild and rugged lands on the Westside fronting Okanagan Lake, between Pebble Beach, near Westbank (off Whitworth Road) and Seclusion Bay Resort (near the junction of Highway 97 and the Okanagan Connector Highway).

Much of the Goat Peak area is environmentally sensitive, and also important from a landscape and cultural perspective. Not only is most of the area one of outstanding natural beauty, but is one of the last unspoiled sections of undeveloped shoreline on the westerly side of Okanagan Lake.

This proposal presents a wonderful opportunity for our community to make this most special and regionally significant area a public asset for all to enjoy. Establishment of a new Central Okanagan Regional Park in this exceptional area would create a most desirable public resource for existing residents and provide a fine legacy for future generations.  With its convenient location to Gellatly Nut Farm and with access to trails from Gellatly Heritage Park, it could become an important component for further encouraging tourism in this region.

The area around Goat Peak is the subject of a Neighbourhood Plan Study under the Westbank Official Community Plan. This Study is being undertaken by New Town Planning Services Inc. on behalf of the several property owners of the Goat Peak Area.

The concept of a trail extending the length of the Regional District of Central Okanagan was developed in the years leading up to the Millennium (Trail 2000). Sections of the trail have been completed, but in a number of areas obtaining a right-of-way remains as the major impediment to completion of this trail. The Goat Peak area is one of the gaps. The proposed new park would fill this gap by providing a trail right-of-way connecting Westbank and Peachland.

Flora and Fauna of the Goat Peak Area

The subject area includes pictographs and other identified First Nations sites. The new Okanagan Regional Park would provide protection for these culturally important sites and furnish an opportunity to safely display these to the general public.
